After the death of his mother, the poet Yusuf returns to his native village. He left years ago. A young woman, Ayla, awaits him in the dilapidated house.

The beautiful and enigmatic Ayla lived together with the deceased. leefde samen met de overledene. Once home, Yusuf resists the villagers’ curiosity, which has been piqued by his brief period of fame in the Turkish media as young poet, before he put aside his writer's pen.

Semih Kaplanoglu follows the main charaters in fascinating style with the camera.  The framing and timing of the film are able to realise their full potential because of the meaningful silences in the telling of the story. It is the simplicity of the approach that make these moments so special.  Yumurta is the director’s third film and is also the first part of a planned trilogy based on the main characters.
