Fazıl Say & Rotterdams Philharmonisch Orkest o.l.v. Hans Leenders
De Turkse pianist en componist Fazıl Say beheerst een fascinerend repertoire uit het Westen en het Oosten, van Turkse volks- en klassieke muziek tot Bartók, Stravinsky en Gershwin. Hij soleert deze avond met het even bekende Rotterdams Philharmonisch Orkest onder leiding van dirigent Hans Leenders.

Esra Dalfidan, 2007 winner of the Dutch Jazz Vocalists Competition, is a singer and composer with a unique style and a fascinating performance technique. Esra Dalfidan, Tineke Postma and their ensemble create a seamless fusion of Turkish and Western jazz.

Het door de broers Gökhan en Hakan Özoguz opgerichte Athena behoort tot de meest vernieuwende popgroepen van Turkije. Athena is op het songfestival 2004 als vierde geëindigd en hun skamuziek zorgt voor één van de meest opzwepende concerten van “Turkey Now“.

Kardes Türküler betekent ‘liederen van broederschap’. Dit ensemble van twaalf muzikanten brengt liederen uit de smeltkroes van de verschillende culturen die Turkije kent, in de oorspronkelijke talen: onder andere Turks, Koerdisch, Georgisch, Laz, Grieks, Roma en Azerbeidzjaans. Karde?ü Türküler combineert enthousiasme en idealisme met pakkende songs en betrokken teksten.

Kudsi Erguner comes from a family of ney players, rooted in the Mevlevi Sufi tradition. With his ensemble he performs classical Ottoman compositions on ney (reed flute), ud (lute), kanun (zyther) and def (frame drum), interspersed with sparkling vocal improvisations.

“Eindspel” Dostlar Company
Het toneelstuk “Eindspel”, geschreven door Beckett, wordt gespeeld door bekende Turkse acteurs waaronder de binnen en buiten Turkije zeer geliefde Genco Erkal en is geregisseerd door Pierre Chabert. Het stuk is een co-productie van de Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts, Dostlar Company en het Internationale Parijs-Beckett Festival en werd in 2006 opgevoerd tijdens het 15de Istanbul International Theatre Festival.

Hij is verschillende keren genomineerd voor de BBC 3 Awards en zijn album ‘Su’ stond 2 maanden lang op nummer één van de European World Music Charts.

De Zweeds-Turkse jazzsaxofonist Ilhan Ersahin heeft opgetreden met grootheden als Eddie Henderson, Wallace Roney, George Cables en Ben Allison. De cultuur van het Midden-Oosten heeft een grote impact op zijn muziek gehad en de invloed van de Turkse muziek doet zich gelden op zijn cd’s en live-optredens.

Ugur Isik beweegt zich als vanzelfsprekend tussen verschillende muzikale werelden. In zijn optredens doorkruist hij met de Westerse klassieke cello de vele volksmuziektradities van Turkije. Als speciale gast speelt de Nederlandse bassist Eric van der Westen mee. Een vernieuwende cellist en bassist die zoeken naar schoonheid en eerlijkheid in de muziek.

De avond begint met de electro van Portecho en wordt voortgezet met de muziek van de nieuwe ster aan het firmament van de Turkse alternatieve muziek, Hayko Cepkin. Vervolgens geeft de sound van dj Style-ist de nacht weer een nieuwe wending.

Percussionisten uit vier landen en muziekculturen zijn in Ethnorhythmix bijeengebracht. Zij mengen de oude ritmes uit de traditionele muziek van India, Iran, Spanje en Turkije tot een uniek spektakel. Daarbij begeleiden zij meesterspelers van unieke instrumenten uit deze culturen.

“Een Spel voor Twee” Dot Theatre
Het verhaal van een man en een vrouw die niet in staat zijn één te worden. Verbonden, maar niet verenigd, dwalen zij door een labyrint binnen een vierkante ruimte. Op de aan de vloer bevestigde draaistoelen kan het publiek de bewegingen van de acteurs binnen de gehele ruimte volgen.

Sibel Köse & Michiel Borstlap Trio
De eerste set van dit dubbelconcert speelt de Nederlandse jazztrompettist Eric Vloeimans met gitarist Onur Ataman en zijn ensemble. In de tweede set een andere boeiende Turks-Nederlandse jazzontmoeting tussen de Turkse vocaliste Sibel Köse en het welbekende Michiel Borstlap Trio.

Medcezir
Medcezir, a concept of composer Selim Doğru, will be an ongoing program of concerts in which arrangements of traditional Turkish music alternate with new pieces by Turkish composers living and working in the Netherlands. In Medcezir the authentic Turkish instruments can be heard in conjunction with Western classical instruments and electronic music, resulting in a rich and varied spectrum of sounds.
The concert is performed by the Axyz Ensemble and five Turkish soloists (both from the Netherlands and Turkey). Medcezir is a joint project of Kulsan and the Karnatic Lab.

The NBE created a new chamber opera based on Rossini’s Il Turco in Italia (1814) or The Turk in Italy. The entire libretto, including the aria lyrics, has been rewritten in Dutch. With Johannette Zomer and Frans Fiselier.

Sertab Erener & Metropole Orchestra opened Turkey Now! 2008
Pop diva Sertab Erener conducted the festive opening of Turkey Now! with pianist/arranger Tuluğ Tırpan in a crossover with the Metropole Orchestra conducted by Arjan Tien. Sertab Erener was the 2003 winner of the Eurovision Song Contest. A unique chance to see this Turkish diva perform live in an orchestral setting!

Teoman is a songwriter and Turkey's undisputed King of Rock who will now take the stage in the Dutch temple of pop.

Dilek - Turkish folk opera about honour killings
Honour killings and honour-related violence are alarming phenomena in both Turkish and European contemporary society. The taboos and conflicts between tradition and modernity that are involved in honour killings return in the new production by theatre company Rast: Dilek, a Turkish folk opera about honour killings. With Dilek Rast intends to expose the roots of the problem and give the victims a voice.
In Dilek authentic Anatolian folk songs are mixed with elements from classical Western opera. Turkish with Dutch supertitles.
