Selim Sesler
A now world-famous company (around 7 musicians) with Turkish Gypsy music and Balkan music from Kesa, Thracia, the European part of Turkey, directed by the amazing clarinet player Selim Sesler.
Selim is from a musician family originally from Drama, Greece, which traditionally played zurna, They were first settled in Ke?¸an's ibriktepe as a result of the 1923 population exchange, and then relocated to Ke?¸an's Yeni
Mescit neighborhood. Selim began by playing zurna, but took up the clarinet in his early teens as many younger members of davul-zuma families began to adopt ince saz instruments in the 1960-s. He began playing village weddings at age 14; and also performed in regional fairs. In the 1980s, he joined the many regional towns Roman musicians moving to larger urban centers, and moved to Istanbul to develop his musical talents. In Istanbul he played fasɱl music in restaurants, provided music for Ferhat
ensöy's musical theater, played Roman and non-Roman weddings, and made many recordings. During these experiences, he has maintained his vast regional repertoire and playing style, serving as a living regional archive. He is renowned among Roman and non-Roman for his improvisational virtuosity, and as a premier interpreter of wedding and modern dance tunes.
