Misirli AhmetMısırlı Ahmet taught himself to play the darbuka when he was seventeen and started his musical career in 1987 in Ankara. He soon moved to France, where he discovered new techniques. He also went to Egypt and worked with the most famous percussionists of that country. That’s when he started using his stage name Misirli Ahmet (Egyptian Ahmet). After his return he recorded the album Oriental and Percussion. In Istanbul he encountered more innovating techniques. His great sense of rhythm and his famous drum solos can now be heard on albums by various world-famous artists. He has represented Turkey at several percussion festivals, including in Tunis and in other Mediterranean countries.

The record series that was recorded in the context of these festivals contains one album that was recorded as a tribute to Mısırlı Ahmet, the album Natural Moments. He has also been declared a ‘master’ of his discipline. Furthermore in 2006 he won the annual prize for top musicians ‘Liderlik Zirvesi’, awarded by Eduplus.

In 2003 Mısırlı Ahmet participated in the Euromed project ‘Medimuses’ and he has performed in nearly every European country, but not yet in the Netherlands. So it is high time you were given the chance to see him perform live at the 2008 Turkey Now Festival.
