Dilek - Turkish folk opera about honour killings

Honour killings and honour-related violence are alarming phenomena in both Turkish and European contemporary society. The taboos and conflicts between tradition and modernity that are involved in honour killings return in the new production by theatre company Rast: Dilek, a Turkish folk opera about honour killings. With Dilek Rast intends to expose the roots of the problem and give the victims a voice.

In Dilek authentic Anatolian folk songs are mixed with elements from classical Western opera. Turkish with Dutch supertitles.

Istanbul Soloists - Cihat Askin

Cihat Aşkın, his ensemble ‘Istanbul Soloists’ and guest Gil Sharon present an unforgettable concert: Georg Friedrich Händel ‘The arrival of the Queen of Sheba’, Muammer Sun (1932) ‘Demet’ Suite, Johan Baptist Vanhal Violin concerto in G, Giuseppe Tartini ‘Le trille du diable’, and Ulvi Cemal Erkin Sinfonietta.

Esra Dalfidan and Tineke Postma

Esra Dalfidan, 2007 winner of the Dutch Jazz Vocalists Competition, is a singer and composer with a unique style and a fascinating performance technique. Esra Dalfidan, Tineke Postma and their ensemble create a seamless fusion of Turkish and Western jazz.

Kudsi Erguner and ensemble (Sufi)

Kudsi Erguner comes from a family of ney players, rooted in the Mevlevi Sufi tradition. With his ensemble he performs classical Ottoman compositions on ney (reed flute), ud (lute), kanun (zyther) and def (frame drum), interspersed with sparkling vocal improvisations.

Efe Baltacıgil & Benjamin Hochman

Efe Baltacıgil and Benjamin Hochman together interpret Turkish and Western classics: Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy Sonata no. 1 in B-flat opus 45, Hasan Uçarsu ‘Türkü’, Ahmed Adnan Saygun Sonata no. 1, and Johannes Brahm's Sonata no. 1 in E opus 38.

Taksim Trio op Turkey Now! festival 2008

Hüsnü Şenlendirici (clarinet), İsmail Tunçbilek (baglama) and Aytaç Doğan (kanun)have each individually had a rich career of live performances and studio recordings, gaining them great fame. With their Taksim Trio they bring their world-class talents and the three instruments - clarinet, kanun and baglama - together on one stage.

“4 Legs” / “4 Ayak”

With her company of 10 dancers the dancer/choreographer Zeynep Tanbay presents her show “4 Ayak”. Her choreography is supported by music by composers such as Philip Glass and poems by the Turkish poet/writer Nazim Hikmet.

Misirli Ahmet: Master darbuka player. His innovative techniques, great sense of rhythm and famous drum solos can now be heard on albums by various world-famous artists. It is about time we got to enjoy him live!

Mikail Aslan Band with Özlem Tanner and Nilüfer Akbal

Three major artists interpret Turkish-Kurdish songs and music from Eastern-Anatolia. Nilüfer Akbal, Özlem Tanner and the Mikail Aslan Band have placed these colours and sounds from Turkey's mosaic on the world map. With their music they prove that all the world's musical tonalities can go side by side naturally.

Teoman - Turkey's King of Rock

Teoman is a songwriter and Turkey's undisputed King of Rock who will now take the stage in the Dutch temple of pop.

His supporting act is the popular Turkish-Dutch band of Tolga Bleda Tuncer with Turkish cover songs.

Baraná Trio and guests (in co-operation with SJIR)

Exciting, funny, melancholy. The Turkish-Dutch trio stretches Turkish traditions towards jazz in this concert with cello wizard Ernst Reijseger and the extraordinary ney, kaval and zurna player Cengiz Baytemür from Istanbul.

Doelen Ensemble & Evrim Demirel

A concert around the young Turkish composer Evrim Demirel, organised by the resident ensemble of the Doelen. In his uniquely accessible style, Evrim combines sounds from contemporary music with techniques from classical Turkish music.

Ferhan and Ferzan Önder

Performances of three compositions for 2 pianos: Igor Stravinsky ‘Le sacre du printemps’, Kâmran İnce (1960) ‘Sheherazade Alive’, Fazıl Say (1970) ‘Sevenlere dair’, and Franz Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody for four hands.

The NBE created a new chamber opera based on Rossini’s Il Turco in Italia (1814) or The Turk in Italy. The entire libretto, including the aria lyrics, has been rewritten in Dutch. With Johannette Zomer and Frans Fiselier.

Sertab Erener & Metropole Orchestra opened Turkey Now! 2008

Pop diva Sertab Erener conducted the festive opening of Turkey Now! with pianist/arranger Tuluğ Tırpan in a crossover with the Metropole Orchestra conducted by Arjan Tien. Sertab Erener was the 2003 winner of the Eurovision Song Contest. A unique chance to see this Turkish diva perform live in an orchestral setting!
