Doelen Ensemble & Evrim Demirel

evrim_demireltn-2008_-logo-320.jpgThe Doelen Ensemble, resident ensemble of concert venue De Doelen, presents a concert around the young Turkish composer Evrim Demirel.

Evrim was born in Izmir in 1977. He studied music at the Bilkent University and in 2000 decided to continue his studies with the composer Klaas de Vries in Rotterdam. He also took classes from jazz pianist Rob van Kreeveld. Since then Evrim has become a renowned jazz pianist in Istanbul, returning from the Netherlands with a large number of awards, including the composition award and the NOG incentive prize for his orchestral work Ottoman Miniatures.

Evrim combines sounds from contemporary music with techniques from Turkish classical music, and Western instruments with instruments from Turkish folk music. The result is an uniquely accessible style. De Doelen also wants to take the opportunity to showcase Evrim’s qualities as a jazz pianist.
The concert was realised in collaboration with Rotterdam-based organisation Kitabo, an artistic education centre oriented on Turkish culture.
