The Taksim Trio will play a series of concerts in the Netherlands in October 2009. The trio, consisting of Hüsnü Şenlendirici (clarinet), İsmail Tunçbilek (baglama) and Aytaç Doğan (kanun) performed for an enthusiastic audience at the Turkey Now! festival in 2008. This book about the Turkish long-necked lute, also known as the saz or bağlama, is the first book about the instrument to be published in the Netherlands. The bağlama has a prominent position in Turkish music culture. It serves as the core in all folk music ensembles and orchestras and is a popular instrument in arabesk, entertainment and pop music. It is the pre-eminent instrument of Turkish music education and the religious rituals of Turkish Alevis. Nowadays the bağlama is appearing more frequently as a solo instrument on international stages. The instrument, belonging to the tanbur family, has a long history in Turkey. The original two-stringed tanbur was already mentioned in pre-Islamic Persian sources. The tanbur travelled along the Silk Road and inspired a large family of three-or more- stringed variations. Some of these instruments had strings arranged in courses, and this variety included the Turkish saz and bağlama.

The Turkish kemençe player Derya Türkan is one of the most progressive kemençe virtuosos and interpreters of classic Ottoman music from Turkey. Renewal is a hallmark of a healthy tradition. Türkan is coming with a trio that combines the nasal voice of the kemençe with the warmth of the cello and the depth of the double bass. (€ 31,50 (CJP € 21,-))

Sufi to Flamenco
Sufi to Flamenco performed 13 shows throughout the Netherlands from 3-18 March 2009. Below is a review of the first performance of this tour. Sufi Flamenco 2009A performance as a stunning journey from Southern Spain via North Africa to Turkey with beautiful ingredients: flamenco, Sufi music from Turkey and dancing Dervishes. There has been a lively cross-pollination between the cultures surrounding the Mediterranean sea since the 11th century. Adrian Elissen, flamenco guitarist, and Tahir Aydogdu, kanun (Turkish zither) player, were amazed during their first meeting at how smoothly they influenced each other. This amazement is still visible on stage.

Translation Prizes 2008 Fonds voor de Letteren

The Translation Prizes 2008 of the Nederlands Fonds voor de Letteren were awarded on 12 December to Margreet Dorleijn and Hanneke van der Heijden (Turkish translators) and to Rien Verhoef (English translator) for their special contributions to the quality and diversity of literature translated into Dutch. The awards ceremony will be held during the tenth edition of the Literary Translation Conference in Utrecht. Each award is accompanied by a 5,000 euro prize. The jury consisted of Barbara de Lange, Arthur Langeveld (chairperson) and Hilde Pach.

Speciale aandacht voor de randen van Europa: Roemenië en Turkije tijdens Beeld voor Beeld documentaire filmfestivalDe 19e editie van het Beeld voor Beeld documentaire filmfestival besteedt uitgebreid aandacht aan nooit eerder in Nederland vertoonde Turkse en Roemeense documentaires. Beeld voor Beeld wil de vaak eenzijdige beeldvorming over deze landen nuanceren door films te tonen die een verrassende kijk van binnenuit op deze samenlevingen geven.
Daarnaast biedt het festival, dat van 4 t/m 8 juni plaatsvindt in het Tropentheater in Amsterdam, vele andere films die ons een blik gunnen op werelden die we nog niet kenden of juist een verfrissende kijk geven op werelden die we dachten te kennen.

In een spiegeltent aan de Sloterplas gaat donderdag 22 mei a.s. Cirklo, de nieuwe locatievoorstelling van Dansgroep Krisztina de Châtel, in première. Op nieuwe muziek van componist David Dramm komen De Châtel-dansers samen met wervelende derwisjen, majorettes en musici uit alle windstreken. Na tien voorstellingen in Amsterdam wordt Cirklo – in aangepaste vorm – op de Parade in Rotterdam gepresenteerd.
Cirklo – Esperanto voor cirkel – draait om veelkleurigheid en veelzijdigheid. In de spiegeltent aan de Sloterplas in Amsterdam ontmoeten de dansers van De Châtel derwisjen en majorettes, ook wel twirlers genoemd. Derwisjen zijn bekend om hun draaiende dansbewegingen waardoor ze in een mystieke trance komen. Choreografe Krisztina de Châtel is gefascineerd door hun spirituele besef, tolerantie en respect voor de ander. Kunnen wij vanuit een vergelijkbare verdraagzaamheid leven zonder hun geloof te delen? Biedt het lichaam zelf ons misschien de mogelijkheid? In haar nieuwe choreografie verbindt De Châtel de fysieke en spirituele kracht van de derwisjen met de aardse bewegingen van haar dansers en de wervelingen van de twirlers.

Pamuks debuut heeft de vorm van een klassieke negentiende-eeuwse familiekroniek, waarin de thema’s uit zijn latere werk al ingenieus aangeraakt en bespeeld worden.De vertaling van De heer Cevdet en zonen is van Veronica Divendal, die van Pamuk tevens De witte vesting en Het nieuwe leven vertaalde.
