Pictures - Halil Necipoglu & Zara
On Wednesday 5 December 2007 Zara and Halil Necipoglu performed in De Doelen in Rotterdam with accompanying whirling Dervishes.
Zara is one of the few female vocalists in Turkey excelling in a range of musical styles including folk, Turkish art music and sufi music and performing with a fabulous voice. Her concert comprised songs from these different music styles.
Halil Necipoglu, imam of the Tophane Kiliç Ali Pasa Mosque in Istanbul, is an extraordinary imam who can preach in English, plays the ney and listens to jazz and classical western music. He recently released his first album called "The Man In The Mosque" (Akustik Müzik).
Both artists share a cosmopolitan approach to ancient Anatolian music forms.
