Gratis concerten met traditionele oosterse muziek
Beroemde musici spelen gratis concerten met traditionele oosterse muziek in de Openbare Bibliotheek van AmsterdamVan dinsdag 17 t/m vrijdag 20 en van maandag 22 t/m woensdag 25 augustus spelen beroemde musici in de Bibliotheek van Amsterdam gratis toegankelijke concerten met traditionele oosterse muziek. De concerten zijn informeel van opzet en vinden plaats van 20.30 tot 21.15 uur op de vierde verdieping van de bibliotheek. In elk concert staat één land of regio centraal. De musici komen uit Iran, Azerbeidzjan, India, Armenië, China, Japan, Oezbekistan, Syrië en Turkije. Zij komen naar Amsterdam voor de internationele Atlas Academy, een project van het Atlas Ensemble. Gedurende twee weken delen zij in het Conservatorium van Amsterdam hun kennis en ervaring, ook met westerse collega’s en componisten. Door oosterse en westerse tradities en instrumenten te combineren, komen in de academy nieuwe composities met ongekende klankkleuren tot stand. Funda Arar in De Doelen
Het eerste concert van de populaire Turkse zangeres Funda Arar in Nederland, dat plaatsvond in februari 2009, was een doorslaand succes. Haar show overtrof de stoutste verwachtingen van massaal toegestroomde fans, die in de grote zaal van De Doelen uit hun dak gingen. Talloze enthousiaste reacties na afloop deden Stichting Mystiek besluiten haar nogmaals uit te nodigen voor een optreden; Funda Arar staat op 1 mei 2010 voor de tweede keer op het podium van het concertgebouw De Doelen te Rotterdam.
Muziektheater Hollands Diep Brengt Nieuwe Opera
Wereldpremière van nieuwe Nederlandse opera naar oud Turks volksverhaal
Muziektheater Hollands Diep brengt een nieuwe Nederlandstalige operaproductie Lege Wieg/Boş Beşik, in samenwerking met VocaalLAB Nederland. De opera gaat op zaterdag 17 april 2010 in wereldpremière. Er worden negen voorstellingen gespeeld in de periode 16 april – 8 mei 2010.De opera is een verrassende bewerking van het bekende Turkse volksverhaal Boş Beşik (Lege Wieg) door componiste Seung-Ah Oh en schrijfster Anne Vegter. in Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ
De jonge Turkse componist Evrim Demirel componeerde in opdracht van het Amsterdamse Symfonieorkest De Philharmonie een zeer bijzonder werk voor symfonieorkest en drie zangers uit verschillende culturen. Dit resulteerde in de Symphony of Dialogue.
Het doel van de componist was een eenheid van drie religies te realiseren in een werk waarin uiteindelijk vrede wordt belichaamd. De teksten zijn afkomstig uit drie religies (Islam, Christendom en Jodendom) en worden gezongen in vijf talen (Latijn, Hebreeuws, Turks, Arabisch en Engels). Ze zijn naast elkaar gezet met gedichten uit de Islamitische Mystiek. Het orkest zorgt voor de muzikale context voor de drie zangers uit Islam, Christendom en Jodendom, die ieder de boodschap uit hun eigen religie representeren.
Evrim Demirel streefde ernaar met zijn muziek een transculturele boodschap van vrede te creëren, een boodschap die religie en cultuur overstijgt, een boodschap die van nature geheel humanistisch is.
Aan deze compositie doen drie bijzondere solisten mee: Selma Harkink (Christendom), Ken Gould (Jodendom) en Halil Necipoğlu (Islam). De laatste is de Imam Hatip van de Dolmabahce Moskee in Istanbul (Beyoglu Muftulugu) en geniet een steeds groter wordende populariteit als vertolker van het lied.
De overige stukken die op het programma hebben een Mediterraan thema: Zes Griekse Dansen van Nikolaos Skalkottas; Iberia van Claude Debussy en Rapsodie Espagnole van Maurice Ravel.

Premiere van het nieuwe programma van het Baraná Quintet Sarap (Wijn)
Wijn als weg naar wijsheid
Muziek kan je in een roes brengen. Dat is zeer zeker de bedoeling van het Baraná Quintet. Inspiratiebron voor het nieuwe programma Sarap (wijn) zijn de geschriften van de Perzische Soefifilosoof Omar Khayyám, waarin de consumptie van wijn en de bijbehorende roes wordt aanbevolen als weg naar dieper inzicht en levenswijsheid. Daar sluiten Behsat Üvez (zang, baglama (saz), percussie) en Steven Kamperman (rietinstrumenten) zich graag bij aan. Wijn is de rode draad voor en programma vol jagende ritmes, verzengende ballades en ‘liederijke’ improvisaties.Er vindt na afloop van het concert een Meet & Greet en feestelijke nazit plaats in verband met de première van de show die avond. Ook is er de mogelijkheid om na afloop gesloten flessen Turkse wijn te kopen.

Karsu op Litesite festival
Vrijdag 14 augustus start de vierde editie van het LiteSide Festival in Cultuurpark Westergasfabriek (Amsterdam). De show wordt geopend door rijzende ster Karsu Donmez, die met haar geweldige stem en pianospel al twee maal in de beroemde Carnegie Hall in New York stond, samen met de dansers van ZEY'BrEaK uit Berlijn.

World premiere Turkish opera
The extraordinary and daring Turkish music theatre production Dâr-ül Love by GarajIstanbul will make its world premiere on May 25.Turkish writer Murat Ipek (Istanbul, 1969) has written a solo for countertenor Nuri Harun Ates about the the love of a man for a man, a subject still 'tricky' in the Turkish milieu. According to Ipek, Anatolians are caught between east and west and have, by nature, a weakness for the roll of victim. Only the suffering of men who love men is never recognised. Ipek has written a Byzantine tale about the subject, in which the audience follows the hero Hamal as he undertakes a journey driven by the question 'why do I exist?' In the end, only the words 'I love you' offer any comfort.
Dâr-ül Love is a coproduction by GarajIstanbul and Operadagen Rotterdam. After its world premiere during Operadagen Rotterdam, Dâr-ül Love will be performed in Istanbul.

Turkish Literature Now!

Literature from Turkey is the focus of this program. Writers and poets from Turkey read from their own work and from Turkish literature that they love, or that has influenced their own work. The presentation is in English, the readings are in Turkish. Each reading will be accompanied by a projection of the text in Dutch and English.
One of the participating authors is Perihan Magden (Turkey, 1960). Orhan Pamuk described her as 'one of the most inventive and outspoken writers of this era'.
Other participating authors are Nese Yasin, Gündüz Vassaf, Kamran Nazirli and Selim Temo.
This literary program was accomplished in collaboration with Stichting Winternachten. Since 1995 Stichting Winternachten has been dedicated to the development and maintenance of a network of writers from the Netherlands and countries with a shared history, such as Indonesia, Surinam, the Netherlands Antilles, Aruba and South Africa. Winternachten organises a self-titled annual festival in the Hague, featuring writers, music and film from these and other - predominantly non-Western - countries. As of 2008 Winternachten has included Turkey and Morocco in the writers' network.

Turkish music from past and present in a balance between traditions and trends.Ottoman, Byzantine and Anatolian roots, Balkan rhythms and Oriental scales have, from time immemorial, formed an amalgamation of related traditions. In the vibrant metropolis Istanbul virtuoso musicians such as Kamil Erdem and Fatih Ahiskali take on these centuries-old traditions with contemporary influences. For the Music: World Series they have formed a brand new group with flautist Mark Alban Lotz and the Scottish rhythm and sound wizard Alan Purves.

Gandhi Bazaar is a new group I've formed for a tour by the Music World Series foundation. In combining five musicians with various backgrounds in jazz, classical, improvised, traditional Indian, Turkish or Flamenco, I have tried to create a form of collective chamber music which uses techniques from all these genres.
Commissioned by the Dutch Fund for the Performing Arts, the music has been composed to bring to life texts by the Dutch/Iranian poet Nafiss Nia.
Musical Encounter in Amsterdam
Osvaldo Golijov and Jeff Hamburg are two contemporary composers who are inspired by traditional Jewish music, the former predominantly by religious music and the latter mostly by klezmer music.
