Gandhi Bazaar

Message from Ned McGowan:

press_photo_ned.jpgGandhi Bazaar is a new group I've formed for a tour by the Music World Series foundation.   In combining five musicians with various backgrounds in jazz, classical, improvised, traditional Indian, Turkish or Flamenco, I have tried to create a form of collective chamber music which uses techniques from all these genres.

Commissioned by the Dutch Fund for the Performing Arts, the music has been composed to bring to life texts by the Dutch/Iranian poet Nafiss Nia.

Our theme is reincarnation - not particularly the religious belief in life after death, but rather about new cycles that one goes through during a single lifetime.   Without consciously stealing a cliché in this time of new politics, there seems to be a lot of change happening around on many levels. Friends are entering into new stages of life, how things are done is changing, new attitudes are emerging, people are changing location, jobs, etc... Nafiss has written beautiful texts to approach this subject in many ways.

  • Esra Dalfidan - voice
  • Raphael Vanoli - electric guitar
  • Enric Monfort - cajon, marimba and percussion
  • B. C. Manjunath - Indian percussion and cajon
  • Ned McGowan - flute, bamboo flute, contrabass flute
