Conclusion Turkey Now! Festival 2008

The Turkey Now! Festival 2008 was concluded with great success in sold-out venues of the Amsterdam Tropentheater and the Rotterdam with concerts by the top-ranking soloists of Anatolian and Alevi folk music Sabahat Akkiraz, Musa Eroglu and Mustafa Özarslan.

This autumn's new theatre season is off to a sizzling start with the second edition of the successful cultural festival Turkey Now!

From 8 October until 17 November Turkey Now! 2008 will present a broad range of cultural events, originating from multi-faceted contemporary Turkey - but rooted in a priceless historical tradition. The festival will take place at well-known venues in the two cities.

Turkey Now! 2008
comprises a colourful programme* of cultural events and highlights with leading groups from Turkish world music, jazz, dance, classical music, pop and special crossover concerts with Dutch artists and ensembles. Theatre, film, jazz cafés, a photo exhibition by the prominent Turkish Magnum photographer Ara Güler and special dishes from the Istanbul Meyhanes (taverns) are included in this unique festival programme.
Turkey Now! 2008 is an invitation to you to enjoy the world of art and culture of contemporary Turkey and special crossover projects between Turkish and Dutch culture.
The program includes:
  • opening concerts by pop singer Sertab Erener (winner of the 2003 Eurovision Song Contest) and pianist Tulug Tirpan with the Metropole Orkest conducted by ArjanTien
  • world music including Turkish-Kurdish music by the Mikail Aslan Band, Özlem Tanner & Nilüfer Akbal; and the popular voices of Sabahat Akkiraz, Musa Eroglu & Mustafa Özarslan
  • jazz, pop and rock in Istanbul by Night and Istanbul Vibes: with Hüsnü Senlendirici’s Taksim Trio, world percussionist Misirli Ahmet and Turkey’s ‘King of Rock’ Teoman
  • classical chamber music including the virtuoso violinist Cihat Askin
  • film, photography, modern dance and theatre with the folk opera Dilek by RAST.
